There are two main worlds, outlands(Burning Crusade) and azeroth(original WoW) if you have Normal WoW, you can play with your friends in azeroth, if your on the same realm, but not in outlands.

and you cant go to outlands(with the burning crusade) unless your 58,also the dreani and Blood elf races are only avilable to those who have WoW burning crusade.
