A good way to make money with professions is Enchanting, you can disenchant higher quality equipment to get Dust, essence and shards which sell for a lot on my server. On EU Alonsus, a stack of Arcane Dust goes for around 50g. But it is also quite expensive to level if you buy all the equips… So just pick it up for the beginning and it should be easier to do so.
Alchemy is also pretty profitable, since at higher levels, flasks are very useful, I buy several flasks before a raid, with each going for around 45g, I spend like 200 – 300g for each raid on them. But it will be quite expensive to level without Herbalism to get herbs for Alchemy.
Also depends on what class you are though, but if your going for the money only, those two are great.

As for leveling earlier on, just go around picking up quests and enjoy the light storyline and before you know it, you explored the whole area and gained a few levels.

To make money quickly, your best bet is to take up gathering professions (Mining, Herbalism, Skinning) instead of crafting professions (Blacksmithing, Tailoring, Leatherworking, Enchanting, Engineering, Jewelcrafting, Alchemy).

The main reason is because with crafting professions, the main things that sell for a bunch of money are the very top high level ones, and to get to that point, you have to invest a lot of money into maxing out your skill, and then usually more money into buying rare patterns.

With gathering professions, I would recommend picking up Skinning and either Herbalism or Mining (I prefer Mining since three crafting professions [Blacksmithing, Engineering and Jewelcrafting] all use it, so demand for ore is always good). Don’t take both Herbs and Mining at the same time, because you can only track one type on your minimap at once.

    Good luck! =)

I have all professions covered on my 6 characters.

I am making the most with my Jewelcrafter, granted she is my highest leval, but my second highest is an alchemist…and all i do is shift potions around to my other characters.

WIth my JC there are a lot of ores that are not important that i can sell in AH, as well as selling any gems over a stach of 20 (my personal strategy). Selling the lower leval created items not the best in AH, but the price from vendors seems to be higher than the same leval items from other professions, plus you get money just from the dust after prospecting a gem out of the ore. At higher lvls there are all the gems for the socketed items….good money.

My tailor/enchanter runs close second, but that is mainly because I send all green or better items that I won’t personally use to her for disenchanting or enchanting and AH selling.

Engineering can make money….but costs a lot also.

To research further I would check out thottbot.com a lot of info there.
